Travertine

Travertine is a type of limestone deposited at the mouths of hot springs. It has a spongy, concretionary structure. Due to its white colour, it was used by the ancients, the Etruscans especially, in their tombs and constructions related to the sacred sphere. We find travertine used in tomb covers, in the stones used to close off dromi (subterranean passageways), in tomb floorings, and in temple structures.
