Spiritual concept

The term ‘spiritual concept’ is perhaps the most suitable one for describing the atmosphere that permeates the Casentino valley. Even in ancient times a strong link was perceived between the environment and the possibility for spiritual expression within that environment. A site considered suitable for this purpose might thus be ‘used’ over the centuries for an Etruscan temple, a palaeo-Christian edifice, and a Romanesque pieve.

This ‘Valley of the Soul’ was the site of hermitages, monasteries and sanctuaries of major importance for the whole Christian world: Camaldoli and La Verna.
